Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests Responds to Criticism in 8/22 Article, "Bingle Writes to Bishop", in Toledo Blade

This comment is in response to the 8/22 article, "Bingle Writes to Bishop". The Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests (ARCWP) chose this time for ordaining bishops not as a protest but rather a witness, an action for justice for women's equality. It is a sacred and prophetic event which will serve as a teaching tool to grow consciousness. It will be seen by many as a blessing, especially women...

Bingle writes to bishop
When Pope Francis is in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 24, the Association of Roman Catholic Women Priests plans to ordain three women bishops at a ceremony near Philadelphia. The Pope will be in Philadelphia on Sept. 25-27.
Olga Lucia Alvarez of Medellin, Colombia; Michele Birch Conery of Windsor, Ont.; and Mary E. Collingwood of Hudson, Ohio; will be elevated from their standing as priest members of the association.
The Rev. Beverly Bingle has written a letter to Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Diocese of Toledo, distancing herself from the event. The Rev. Bingle is a Toledoan who was ordained by and is a member of Roman Catholic Women Priests, an organization different from the association conducting the ordination, though an RCWP bishop, Sibyl Dana Reynolds, will be one of three consecrating bishops.
The Rev. Bingle continues to identify herself as a Roman Catholic although her ordination means that she is excommunicated. The Roman Catholic Church does not ordain women. She wanted the bishop to know that “I am not involved with that,” she said.
She considers it inappropriate to use the papal visit for that attention. “I wish they wouldn't, she said.
During the papal visit, Rev. Bingle said, she plans to stay in Toledo. She leads the Holy Spirit Catholic Community, which now has Masses at 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and 5 p.m. Sundays in the chapel at the Washington Church, 3925 W. Central Ave.
